Batik is a technique, not a design.

Traditional batik is made by applying wax to fabric as a resist before dyeing, creating patterns through a careful process of waxing, colouring and removing the wax. The result is more than a pattern, it is a textile shaped by wax, dye, craftsmanship and the hands of the maker.

The Craftsmanship

Terengganu batik is among Malaysia’s most distinguished textile traditions, renowned for its intricate hand-drawn motifs and refined dyeing techniques. Each fabric is created through time-honoured processes such as canting and block printing, where wax is applied by hand before layers of dye reveal its depth and character. Originating from the coastal heritage of Terengganu, this craft continues to evolve as a living expression of Malaysian artistry, elevated through contemporary design.

The Fabrics

Our approach to sustainability is rooted in thoughtful transformation. We source premium cotton and linen fabrics from luxury hotels and give them a new life as handcrafted batik garments designed for lasting quality.

We also use TENCEL™ fabrics, produced through a closed-loop process using sustainably sourced wood, including eucalyptus, to create soft, breathable and biodegradable fibres. By combining reclaimed materials with thoughtfully selected fabrics, we aim to reduce waste while creating meaningful garments that respect both craft and material.

The Story

Each KAAIN piece is brought to life through a network of skilled artisans and ateliers across Malaysia. We collaborate with master batik craftsmen in Terengganu, experienced textile artisans, and skilled tailors from refugee communities in Kuala Lumpur.

By bringing together generations of traditional knowledge with contemporary design, we create garments that honour Malaysia’s rich craft heritage while giving these skills a place in modern life. For us, craftsmanship is not simply about preserving the past, it is about creating meaningful opportunities for skilled makers and ensuring their knowledge continues to evolve and thrive.
